CONNECTING PEOPLE, PLACES AND PARKS

Grants

Project Name: James Park Baseball Diamond

Project Location: Village of Marblehead

The infield of the little league baseball diamond at the north end of Marblehead’s James Park was renovated in 2025 with the assistance of a Parks and Trails Improvement Grant from the Park District of Ottawa County. The Park District provided $20,683.00 of the $41,500.00 cost of the project with the Village paying the balance.

The original surface layer of fine material had long disappeared, leaving the abrasive, coarse sub material, generating complaints by parents and players. Also, the field had areas of standing water after rainfall. The Village’s Parks Committee determined the best method for addressing the situation was to replace all the material with the proper build-up of layers and properly grade the surface for positive drainage. The renovation work was performed by Tyler Athletic Fields.

In addition, the Village enhanced the ballfield’s amenities by replacing the bleachers with a safety-compliant design, replacing the players’ benches in the two dugouts, and adding a concrete pad as a base for the new bleachers and concrete pads in the two dugouts.

All of these improvements were completed ahead of the 2025 little league season organized by The Peninsula Youth Athletic League.
