Project Name: Trail Improvements

Project Location: Veterans Memorial Park in the Village of Genoa

The Village of Genoa has completed an important accessibility project at Veterans Park with support from the Park District of Ottawa County’s Parks & Trails Improvement Grant Program. The Village received $50,000.00 in grant funding to construct new paved trails connecting the park’s popular recreational amenities.

Veterans Park serves as a hub for youth sports and community recreation in Genoa, offering baseball, softball, and soccer fields, along with tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts.

Significant investments by the Village and the Park District, many supported through previous Parks and Trails Improvement Grants, have helped revitalize the park. As a result, Veterans Park is experiencing attendance levels not seen in decades.

Despite these improvements, the park’s recreation fields lacked paved, accessible trail connections, creating challenges for visitors with limited mobility. The Genoa Public Works Department completed the excavation and installed the aggregate base for the new trails. Grant funding from the Park District then allowed the Village to hire a contractor to complete the asphalt paving.

The new trails provide safer, more convenient access throughout Veterans Park, particularly for people with disabilities, older adults, and families using strollers, helping ensure that the park’s growing recreational opportunities can be enjoyed by everyone.
