Project Name: Veterans Park Restroom and Concessions Building
The Village of Genoa has completed one of the largest projects yet to be made possible by the Parks and Trails Improvement Grant, the completion of a new restroom and concessions facility in Genoa’s Veterans Memorial Park. This project was funded by the Park District of Ottawa County, Shores & Islands Ohio, and the Village of Genoa. Much of the funding from the Village of Genoa was ultimately from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) stimulus.
Veterans Park was established after World War II, with baseball fields being constructed beginning in the 1950s. For more than seventy years, there has been no running water or proper bathroom facility for players and visitors. The Village had rented port-a-john facilities for the summer months, creating an unenviable experience. The Village also had no running water for proper concessions offerings.
With the construction of the restroom/concession facility, Veterans Park has immediately become the youth sports epicenter of the Genoa area community, and established the park and Village as a proper starting point for visitors utilizing the North Coast Inland Trail through the town. The facility includes four separate bathrooms, including two family bathrooms with diaper-changing stations. In the middle of the building is a new concessions facility with appropriate power and water hookups capable of preparing hot foods. The Village of Genoa’s Public Works Department extended water and sewer utilities almost 700 feet from SR 163 to service the new building.
